Richard Greene. Oxford: The Clarendon Press, Editor's Note: This volume is a successor to Mr. Greene's expansive and authoritative The Early English Carols ().

It is, in part, an abridgment, and, in part, an expansion due to the discovery after World War II of MS Egerton (now in the British Museum). William Sandys ( – 18 February ) (pronounced "Sands"), was an English solicitor, member of the Percy Society, fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and remembered for his publication Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern (London, Richard Beckley, ), a collection of seasonal carols that Sandys had gathered and also apparently improvised.

The Cowley Carol Book was edited by George Ratcliffe Woodward and was published in andin two parts, ('First' and 'Second' Series), and was subtitled as a selection of carols "for Christmas, Easter and Ascensiontide". The First Series was produced by George Ratcliffe Woodward, and for the second, later volume he was assisted by Charles Wood.

Carols Ancient & Modern fills this gap with a comprehensive new selection of carols. Certainly there are many traditions such as the sending of Christmas Cards, and singing Christmas hymns and carols, that are well worth preserving.

Each piece has the original language as well as English lyrics. Included are carols from English (including African American Spirituals), French, German, Scandinavian, Slavic, Italian, Spanish and Latin sources.

This book is the most comprehensive history of the English language you can find that is accessible to the non-linguist. It will help you understand why English spelling is such a disaster, how different dialects of English came to be different from each other, and why language change is not as evil as people might think.4/5.
